Student-Led Service in Action: Asclepius

Written by JIS students, Denzel, Axel, and Malaika

Healthcare Is a Fundamental Human Right

Millions of children all around the world, however, do not share the same luxury. From socioeconomic barriers to insufficient awareness, these children have to confront significant obstacles to receive the necessary medical attention. Asclepius is working to address this issue. Asclepius is a service club run by Denzel (Grade 12), Axel (Grade 11), and Malaika (Grade 11) from Jakarta Intercultural School, with the goal of improving access to healthcare for underprivileged communities in Jakarta.

This year, the club has worked to raise awareness, support local health initiatives, and reach children across the city. In doing so, our mission is to continue to improve healthcare in Jakarta through research, blood drives, health screenings for children, hospital visits, and CPR training – all carried out with class and compassion.

Asclepius Provides Free Check-Ups for Children in Need

One of its largest events of the year was a collaboration with Royal Progress Hospital, during which 50 children from Sekolah Kami and House of Hope Orphanage received free check-ups. A significant proportion of the children do not have access to BPJS (government healthcare) or cannot afford regular doctor visits. At Asclepius’ event, professional medical personnel collected various metrics, assessed the children's health, identified potential issues, and drafted follow-up plans, including prescriptions, which were covered by Asclepius. In addition, the medical professionals from RS Royal Progress also gave talks on proper nutrition and sanitation practices for the children, ensuring that healthy habits were built.

The Club Raises Awareness and Support Through Blood Drives

To further its impact, the organization also hosts quarterly blood drives in collaboration with the JIS Human Resources department. These drives collect over 100 bags of blood each quarter, which are donated to procedures in hospitals across Jakarta. The blood drive not only raises awareness of the critical need for blood donations but also fosters a sense of support and responsibility within the local community.

Dental Screenings Help Children Build Better Health

At another event, in collaboration with Kejora Indonesia and the school's dental club, Celsus conducted dental screenings for over 30 children from orphanages and trash-picking communities. Most of them face significant barriers to accessing health care because of their lack of government insurance or legal documentation. Many had never even been to a dentist before. On this occasion, the club provided the dental care these children needed and taught them about oral hygiene — a small but important step towards improving their overall health.

Emotional Support Is Just as Important as Physical Health

Healthcare goes beyond physical well-being; emotional support plays a crucial role in recovery. That’s why Asclepius has started to host monthly visits to the Ronald McDonald House of Charity (RMHC). During these visits, the club organizes activities like drawing, storytelling, and games for children recovering from hospital stays. These activities provide moments of joy and distraction during challenging times, helping the children feel cared for and supported. The manager at RMHC has expressed genuine appreciation for the visits, noting the positive energy and comfort the children experience during these interactions.

Members Are Trained in Life-Saving Skills

In addition to serving the community, the organization prioritizes equipping its members with essential life-saving skills. Each semester, members undergo CPR certification training, ensuring they are prepared to act in emergencies. They receive official certification from HSI, including First Aid training.

Every Child Deserves a Chance to Thrive

Too many children in the community face systemic barriers to healthcare, leaving them vulnerable to preventable illnesses and developmental challenges. The organization believes every child deserves access to healthcare, not just to survive, but to thrive. Whether it’s through a simple check-up, a dental screening, or a fun activity during a hospital stay, the club hopes its efforts make a tangible difference.

The Work Continues With the Help of the Community

While Asclepius has accomplished so much this semester, it is looking forward to planning events and expanding its partnerships to help even more children.

It all begins with a step—with others. Whether a student, parent, faculty member, or just someone from the community, they can support the organization in multiple ways. They can volunteer, raise money, or simply pass on the word about its work. Every act, whether big or small, will help create healthier futures for children in need.
