Middle School is about connections. It's a time to build powerful bonds between friends, between learning and real life, between interests and actual experiences.

Soon enough, hard choices about university and life directions will emerge, but this is a time to explore joyfully and freely — leaving no possible strength or talent undeveloped.

In Middle School, alongside academics, we focus on developing dispositions to support students’ success in any future endeavor. Middle School teachers particularly focus on developing resourceful, resilient, relating, and reflective learners.

Our Curriculum

We recognize that Middle School students (Grades 6-8) are in the midst of a unique period of change, from childhood to adolescence, and that their education should be broad, challenging, and designed to help nurture each student and help them achieve their full potential.

Overview

Students at JIS Middle School are challenged as learners using best teaching practices that support the needs of all our students' various learning styles. The curriculum is rigorous, exciting, and promotes growth within each student.

By providing choice and opportunity to explore new interests, students are able to take an active role in their education, preparing them for learning in high school.

Middle School Course Description Guide

Our program:

Is designed to prepare students for our rapidly changing world.
Incorporates the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals into the curriculum to ensure a global understanding of the impacts that we have on our environment.
Celebrates student voice and choice.
Supports an atmosphere that is physically and emotionally safe, free of prejudice, and respectful of what makes each student unique.
Encourages partnerships between home and school.
Celebrates Indonesia’s unique and diverse cultural and geographic features.
Follows Indonesian government regulations that require Indonesian students to take Bahasa Indonesia and civics classes, as well as religious studies.

Course Selection

We are committed to offering age-appropriate and challenging experiences for our students. We aim to offer experiences that emphasize participation and creativity while preparing students for their futures. Our elective and exploratory programs throughout the grade levels are designed to encourage students to explore areas of interest, attempt new challenges, and broaden their experience and expertise.

Students in each grade level take a mix of required and elective courses. In Grade 6, students do not get to choose their electives but are randomly assigned to courses. This provides an opportunity for them to explore a wide variety of learning opportunities while learning about themselves. Students in Grade 7 and 8 choose their elective courses, as well as study a language or play an instrument.

JIS Studio is a pathway that is available to students in Grade 7 and 8. In this pathway, rather than moving from class to class or subject to subject, students work through thematic problem-based learning that generates projects which integrate all different content areas. In addition, the Studio curriculum is based on the same grade-level standards while providing the autonomy to pursue their passions and areas of interest.

Student Support Services

The student support services team (SST) is a multidisciplinary group that may be composed of a principal, counselor, learning support teacher(s), classroom teacher(s), speech and language pathologist, English-as-an-additional-language (EAL) teacher, learning support coordinator, school psychologist, and any other relevant staff involved in the program of an individual student. The SST supports both teachers and students when a student may need additional learning support or enrichment.

Service Learning

Service learning is a critical part of the JIS Middle School experience. We believe service should be embedded in student learning experiences through classes. The program provides opportunities for students to become stewards of the environment, to develop a relationship with Indonesia, to show compassion and empathy, to appreciate cultural diversity, and to be courageous. Service learning opportunities occur through curricular areas and many opportunities exist for students to become involved in service learning through clubs and scheduled trips.

Community, Identity, Relationships, and Belonging

To build a strong and supportive community, the entire Middle School engages in off-campus experiences to help students strengthen relationships, build their identities, and develop a sense of belonging — all important aspects of our Middle School program.

We offer a wide range of inclusive activities designed to encourage student involvement in school life and foster personal responsibility.

When it comes to activities at the Middle School, our philosophy is “try everything”. From clubs to sports, we offer a broad range of after-school activities to enable students to do just that.

Participating in after-school activities throughout the year is a great way for students to become well-rounded. Students who are active and love coming to school enjoy more academic success.

Challenging and Fun

Middle School is not supposed to only be challenging; it’s also meant to be fun! We build excitement into each and every day for our students. By making school a place that students want to be, their passion for learning naturally grows.

Many students help to plan, schedule, and lead events and celebrations for the whole Middle School. These leadership experiences are invaluable for our students.

Community of Care

We have a commitment to making sure that each student is appropriately supported. This commitment goes beyond the classroom and looks after student physical and mental wellbeing. As a school, we share this responsibility within a Community of Care.

We seek to promote within our students a positive outlook for life, and we help our students become balanced and successful citizens, well-equipped with the ability to think critically and logically about the information they access and the decisions they make.

Where We Learn

The JIS Middle School campus is the perfect environment for students to learn, grow, and achieve their very best. Our world-class facilities are located within a tropical garden, filled with plants native to Indonesia. Many students spend their time between classes on the playground, playing sports, reading, or making friends in one of our beautiful outdoor spaces. The campus facilities and what they allow students to accomplish provide the backdrop to an incredible JIS experience.
