IB Career-Related Program

JIS is a candidate school* for the International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (CP) and pursuing authorization as an IB World School for the CP.

What is the IB Career-related Programme?

The IB CP is the newest program in the IB family. The IB CP is a rigorous, two-year program starting in Grade 11. The CP is a framework of international education that incorporates the values of the IB into a unique program addressing the needs of students engaged in career-related education. The program leads to further/higher education, apprenticeships, or employment.

Career-related Programme students will access a broad, flexible education which will give them knowledge, practical training, intellectual engagement, and international-mindedness, while developing higher-order cognitive skills and academic behaviours that will enhance their employability and dramatically alter their world view.

Who is the IB Career-related Programme for?

The CP was specifically developed for students who wish to engage in career-related learning while gaining transferable and lifelong skills in applied knowledge, critical thinking, communication, and cross-cultural engagement. The IB CP is designed for students who want to dedicate themselves to career-related learning fostering lifelong, transferable skills in applied ethics, intercultural understanding, critical and creating thinking, effective communication, and personal development.

Why Study the IB Career-related Programme?

The IB CP prepares students for further/higher education, apprenticeship, or employment. It is more flexible than the IB Diploma Programme as it offers students more choice in their subjects. Students gain career-related experiences and graduate from high school with the skills they will need in the specific field of their choice.

The Career-related Programme helps students to:

  • Develop a range of broad work-related competencies and deepen their understanding in specific areas of knowledge through their IB Diploma Programme course

  • Develop flexible strategies for knowledge acquisition and enhancement in varied contexts

  • Prepare for effective participation in the changing world of work

  • Foster attitudes and habits of mind that allow them to become lifelong learners willing to consider new perspectives

  • Become involved in learning that develops their capacity and will to make a positive difference

Successful students studying the IB CP must:

  • Have completed the specified career-related study

  • Have been awarded a grade 3 or more in at least two of the IB Diploma Programme courses registered for the Career-related Programme

  • Have been awarded a grade of at least D for the reflective project

  • Have met personal and professional skills, service learning, and language development requirements 

  • Not have received a penalty for academic misconduct

The Core of the Career-related Programme

The components of the core are at the heart of the IB Career-related Programme and are designed to enhance students’ personal qualities and professional development.

The IB Career-related Programme core contextualizes IB Diploma Programme courses and the career‑related study, and draws all aspects of the framework together. The core is designed to develop many of the characteristics and attributes described in the IB learner profile.

International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme students can earn up to 25 credit hours at SCAD and benefit from unmatched resources and individual attention. Qualified high school students admitted to SCAD for dual enrollment through IBCP may be eligible to receive up to a half-tuition scholarship.
