Admission Policy
Jakarta Intercultural School welcomes learners who can benefit from and contribute to a high-quality elementary to secondary university preparatory curriculum.
Grade Placement Policies

In the Early Years Program, placement is based on grade-level age requirements.
From Grade 1 onward, placement for students joining at beginning of the JIS school year is based on grade levels already completed at an accredited school.
Students who arrive after the JIS school year has started will continue in the grade level in which they were enrolled as of August of the current JIS school year. For example, a student from Australia who is in Grade 1 in August 2022 will continue in Grade 1 at JIS if they join during the 2022/23 school year.
The Student Support Team will make a final decision on grade placement following these guidelines after a comprehensive review of an application.
Early Years Policy
Early Years students must be fully toilet trained prior to admission.
Elementary Campus Placement Policy
JIS has two Elementary campuses: Pattimura (PEL) and Pondok Indah (PIE). PEL is closer to embassies and the Central Business District while PIE is in a residential area in South Jakarta. Travel time between the campuses is approximately 20 minutes.
Admission priority is given to applicants based on the area of residence. In addition, if a grade level or student support service has reached capacity at the student's preferred campus, the student will be assigned to the alternate campus. The school reserves the right to determine these placements.
High School Admission Policies
The High School offers open enrollment for the Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, and IB Career-related programs. Students who are self-disciplined, organized, and motivated are welcome to enroll in these programs. IB pathways are two-year programs and students are expected to begin them in Grade 11.
To be eligible for enrollment in the High School a student must meet the following JIS graduation requirements:
- Earn 24 High School credits*
- Attend 8 semesters of High School
- Successfully pass 4 years of English, and at least 2 years each of Math, Science, Social Studies, Modern Language, Creative Arts, and PE courses, plus one semester of Health
- Fulfill all Ministry of Education requirements for High School students
- Attend at least 2 semesters at JIS and earn at least five credits* from JIS.
- Complete graduation requirements before turning 21 years of age.
*One-half credit = satisfactory and successful completion of one full semester, including all key summative assessments. A JIS student can earn a maximum of 4 credits per semester.
Grade 12 transfer students: JIS can admit Grade 12 transfer students from Lanes 1 and 2 who meet the above requirements. New 12th grade students must join within 2 weeks of the start of the first semester.
Indonesian Ministry of Education Course Requirements
As an Indonesian school under the auspices of the Ministry of Education (MoE), Jakarta Intercultural School is committed to following MoE rules and regulations. (MoE decree no 31 year 2014) These are legal requirements and no student or parent may opt-out of these course requirements.

Indonesian Students must enroll and receive credit for: Bahasa Indonesia, PPKn (Civics) and Agama (i.e 1.5 hours a week of religious education including class attendance) in school, coursework and project work. In addition, Indonesian students must sit/complete all mandated National Examinations (Ujian Nasional).

Non-Indonesian Students must undertake a semester course of Indonesian Studies during their time at JIS, once in Middle School and once in High School. A semester of Indonesian Studies is required in the High School regardless of whether or not they have completed Indonesian Studies in the JIS Middle School or any other school.

We can offer places at each grade level to a limited number of students who require support services. Areas of support include: English as an Additional Language (EAL), speech and language services (Elementary and Middle School only), occupational therapy (Elementary School only), academic support, classroom guidance, and individual counseling. Admission is contingent on a match between the student's needs and the level of services available.
The admission of any student with identified needs (language or learning) is determined on a case-by-case basis using multiple sources of information, such as school records, evaluations, Individual Learning Plans, and in some cases, an interview.
Admissions Priority Policy
JIS groups applications into three Application Lanes.
Dependents of employees of JIS founding embassies (United States, United Kingdom, and Australia), and eligible dependents of JIS faculty.
Expatriate or host country students coming from overseas who do not yet have a school in Jakarta.
Expatriate or host country students transferring from a local or international school in the Greater Jakarta area (JABODETABEK). Applications in this lane have a deadline of March 1 and is for August enrollment only. You will be notified of your admission status after April 15.
